Summer 2013
We are starting a summer Book Club with my homeschool group in June. I will put our book list here along with activities, fieldtrips, and other resources that we use to make our books come to life! We will take turns hosting a book reading two each month. I will list them in order starting with ours that we are hosting first!
Homer Price by Robert McCloskey
I have made a booklet of activities & fun resources to go along with Homer Price as we read it! We will come together in 2 weeks to discuss the story and share some of our exciting activities that we have completed. We will also have an "All American Cookout" for lunch! I listed a bunch of fun things for "go alongs" in the booklet.....not all of them have to be done. I was looking for variety. So pick and choose which activities you would like to complete or by all means do them all. My kids will be keeping a Reading Notebook to store these pages in. Most likely we will cut the pages to fit inside of a spiral notebook. You can always use a 3-ring binder if that is easier. I want to acknowledge Delightful Learning, Lesson Pathways, and Klecmusic for all of their Homer Price resources. I pulled a lot of their ideas in with this! You can check out Teaching Resources for some literacy printables.
The United States Map *Use this map throughout the book club to keep track of settings in each book.
Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard & Florence Atwater
We will be using Homeschool Share's Unit Study for Mr. Popper's Penguins which is Level 5. Everyone will be picking and choosing what they do from the unit study.

We will watch the movie with some Popcorn!!

The World Map *I will have a World Map & the USA Map in our book club booklets to track the different places/settings for each book we read.
Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt
We plan on watching the movie afterwards.
Fieldtrip: Go to a local Spring to drink water and have a picnic while we discuss the book Tuck Everlasting!
The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling
Here is an interactive site called Field Museum.org that shows the steps in making chocolate.

Here is the Free Literature Unit Guide for The Chocolate Touch. I have the book from Teacher Created Materials but when I googled activities for the book, I found it free online. Make sure to read The Midas Touch before beginning the book. Enjoy!

Watching Charlie & The Chocolate Factory may be a good fit after reading this book!!
Have a chocolate party!! Make sure to wear a party hat in the shape of your favorite chocolate bar or candy!! (I will post pictures of ours from our party)
The kids sat around in a circle while one mother called out comprehension questions about The Chocolate Touch. We drew names for each child to answer the question and if they got it right they picked a piece of chocolate from the bowl in the center. (Everyone answered correctly!!)
Games
1. We played a candy bar game where we had 12 ziplock bags with a piece of a candy bar in each bag (Each bag had to be a different kind). Everyone had to jot down what they think each numbered bag was. The top 3 winners got to choose a candy bar to eat!
2. The kids got into two teams. (We did boys vs. girls) Each team lined up in a row parallel to one another. The player blindfolded sat in the chair and they had to eat a small fraction of a piece of chocolate and guess what it was. They rotated until everyone had a turn....the winning team won a mini chocolate bar.
3. Fill a bag with M&M's.....graph your colors!
This was such a fun book for the kids & we had a fantastic Chocolate Party!

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
This APPLE Classics book is what I would consider appropriate for middle school & high school kids. The dialect in this story would be too difficult for younger children to read & understand.
This abridged book is what I'll be reading with my younger two children....my oldest will be reading the original Huckleberry Finn.
Enjoy the Audio Book if you don't have time to read it!
